MURFREESBORO — History gave way to her story, one that could not have been scripted better.
Diana Grandas, the lone senior on the record-setting Webb School of Knoxville girls tennis squad, earned the clinching victory Wednesday as the Lady Spartans became the state’s first to win seven consecutive team championships.
Webb concluded a perfect 15-0 season with a rain-interrupted 4-0 triumph over St. George’s in the Division II-A girls team finals at Old Fort Park. Play moved indoors when showers struck. Then Webb struck, ending it lightning-quick.
“It feels amazing. I clinched the match with a forehand cross-court winner, and started crying when coach Jimmy (Jim Pitkanen) came out. All the teams from the past were running through my head.
