MURFREESBORO — History gave way to her story, one that could not have been scripted better.

Diana Grandas, the lone senior on the record-setting Webb School of Knoxville girls tennis squad, earned the clinching victory Wednesday as the Lady Spartans became the state’s first to win seven consecutive team championships.

Webb concluded a perfect 15-0 season with a rain-interrupted 4-0 triumph  over St. George’s in the Division II-A girls team finals at Old Fort Park. Play moved indoors when showers struck. Then Webb struck, ending it lightning-quick.

“It feels amazing. I clinched the match with a forehand cross-court winner, and started crying when coach Jimmy (Jim Pitkanen) came out. All the teams from the past were running through my head. Then all the team came running out and I started bawling,” said Grandas, who beat Claire McCord 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles for her fifth team title.
