MANCHESTER — Spencer Cross sizzled in the off-and-on drizzle Wednesday as the Sevier County junior handily won the TSSAA Class AAA boys individual state golf championship with a 10-under-par 134 at WillowBrook Golf Club.
“I’m surprised, but I’ve been playing some pretty good golf lately,” said Cross, who posted a four-shot victory over William Nottingham of Dobyns Bennett (138) for medalist honors. “This is probably the best finish I’ve had. I’ve played in some big tournaments before but this is by far the best finish I’ve accomplished.”
“He handled himself great today,” Sevier County coach Chad Owenby said. “He’s definitely one of the best players in this state. The cream always rises to the top in this tournament and I knew he had a chance.”
Farragut finished runner-up finish to Brentwood as a team, though the defending state champion Admirals entered the final round with a four-shot lead.
Farragut finished the two-day tournament at 13-over 589, one shot behind Brentwood. Hendersonville finished a distant third at 601.
